The following are some lesser known (or some known) employment resources. These methods are well known to sales people and mostly used for that purpose.
The Polk Directory
This free directory contains a plethora of information on business and individuals. This master book is published and is in every public library. It is also available on the web and here is their website which will give you the details.
For well over a century, Polk directories have made finding information easier and more efficient. And now, our nationwide city directory is available online. The Polk Directory offers several ways to find the information you're looking for. You can find a business or person online if you know any of the following bits of data:
- The business or person's name
- Phone number
- Street address
- Type of business
- That the business falls into a specific radius of a given location
- Number of people the business employs
- Sales volume
The Polk Directory is far more than a listing of names and phone numbers. For example, a simple business name search can reveal the business' telephone number, street address and map, the SIC code number and description, the estimated sales volume in $US, the number of people employed by the business, and more! Likewise, when you search for a person using the Polk Directory, you can get a phone number, street address, type of business the person is in, lifestyle choices, demographic information, and more!
May also be sectioned by type of business

Dodge Reports
Dodge Reports are a paid marketing service which send post cards or alerts to their subscribers of new business construction in the areas the subscriber designates. How does this help you if you aren't in construction? It indicates new business and industry locating to your area and with some phone calls you can get a jump on the hiring for that location. Dodge gets it's information from city and county building permits and this info is also available for free, but takes some time and leg work on your part. These permits are also listed in the newspaper.

Chamber of Commerce
Every city, suburb has one. Your best bang for your buck is the largest local city.
Member Directory - They publish a directory, which may cost you to obtain, of all their business members. It indicates the same info as the Polk, but has specific names and their positions, types of business and other info.
Top 200 - Most large city Chambers publish a few pages of the Top 200. These are the Top 200 employers in your area. A lot of times these are free. These businesses are usually just a listing with a on line of info and can be cross referenced in the Chamber Member Directory or Polk Directory. For smaller cities just ask for the top employer listing.
Individual Memberships -You do not have to be a business to be a member of the Chamber of Commerce and they do have individual memberships. This of course is an
investment, but if you consider the amount you spend on resumes and what not it can be justified. You will be listed in their directory and will also be invited to MANY Chamber activities you can attend and network - clam bakes, golf outings, dinners with speakers.
Many smaller suburban Chambers have this information available for free. Look for cities with the highest growth in business and residential building.
GOVERNMENT HR JOB LISTINGS
City, State and Federal jobs can be found online under the specific entities website and changes daily.
INDUSTRY MAGAZINES
These will not be found at your local magazine stand or bookstore they are specific to a specific industry and a good online search or simply calling a business and asking them what industry magazines they are aware of will help. Many are free. For example a friend of mine was in the recycling industry and found a new managerial job in a mag called Recycling Today in their classifieds section. These magazines will keep you up on the latest in your industry and where the growth markets are and also tell you when and where conventions and events are taking place you may want to attend.
SOME THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO KNOW
Always check with a tax accountant or right in the itemization booklet for your federal taxes, but the costs incurred for finding a job are itemizable business expenses. This includes, subscriptions to industry magazines, newspapers, resume services and printing, stamps, mileage, association memberships and at one time a new suit.
Please feel free to add more to this list if you have an idea and some info about it.
