I recently graduated with a bachelors degree and am looking into going to grad school or maybe law school. I'm going to take some time to study for the LSAT/GRE and apply for fall of 2012. In the mean time, I'd like to get back to working. In college I did construction for a family friend's business one summer. I'd like to get back in the field so I can pay some bills and continue to do it while I go to school at night (and it will be a good fall back plan if school doesn't work out) but I don't live near the family friend anymore. I certainly didn't learn enough to have any real considerable "experience" and anything I did learn I've forgotten by now. How can I land another job like that? Craigslist? Newspaper? I always see trucks out on the road of painters, general contractors, landscapers, etc. with their phone numbers written on them. Should I just start jotting these numbers down and calling them up asking if they need a laborer? What field should I go into? Excavation, carpentry, landscaping? Are the illegal immigrants taking up most of these jobs and making it hard for Americans to get these jobs? (I live in California)

Why would you choose construction? It is so beat down you wonder if it will ever come back. I think the unemployment rate among construction workers is about 20%. Have you considered driving a truck?
