My probation at work is coming to an end in about 1 or 2 weeks. My boss is on vacation right now so I don't really know when for sure. It's my job at the dollar store as you guys know. Does anyone know how the 3 month probations are looked at? Do they look at the whole thing or would they see how you are at the end?

I know it's kind of late now. I saw my school counsellor today for help about how I should worry less when I'm working and ways to block negative thoughts. She suggested that I could ask my boss to lengthen my probation when he comes back from vacation. The least he could do is say no. Does anyone know about the possibilty of an employer lengthening a probationary period if asked for it? I'm doing so-so at my job and think I need a little bit more time. What do you guys think?

Probationary period or not, if you failed at your duties you would have been let go by now. I think you are worrying about nothing...Or am I missing the point of this thread?

So you're saying I should have been fired even during the 3 month probation if they didn't like what I was doing? But doesn't it vary by employer?

The only time a probationary period is extended is if you are doing a poor job and need more time to be considered as a permanent employee. I've never heard of anyone asking to have their probationary period lengthened, by doing so you will clearly appear to admit your short-comings.

So if the possibility of extending it can happen at my job, would it have been mentioned to me from the beginning? The boss and assistant manager told me that if I wasn't capable of doing the job at the end of 3 months, then "mmmm mmm mmm" (one way my boss said I'd be let go). The possibility of extending the probation was never mentioned to me. Does it vary by employer? And what if I'm doing less than poor? What if I'm doing just "okay" right now?

1. Don't ask for additional probation time.
2. If they wanted you gone, you would be gone.
3. If you show up, act half way intelligent, they know you are a keeper.
4. Have more self esteem.

I don't know if this would change you guys' opinions, but the boss makes me sign these papers every few weeks. I'm sure they have to do with my probation. What do you guys think now?
