For those of you who went to college, do you remember the infamous "common app?"
https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/default.aspx
You fill out one application and you can use it to apply to hundreds of colleges based on filling our your vital information ONCE. Why don't we do this for jobs?
I noticed that Taleo handles most of the job apps for big corporations; it shouldn't be too difficult if they developed such a database and use it to allow applicants to cross-apply at different companies...

Googling around, the only answer I've found so far as to why NOT to do it is because states may have different regulations as to what employers may ask of applicants, but even with the regulations, don't we (the applicants) ALWAYS (and I mean always) have to fill out some basic essentials?
Name
Home Address
Contact Phone #
Education
Work History
Yes, these are basically the exact same items listed on your resume, but imagine how much simpler the hiring process would be (for employers) if information as basic as this can be directly put into a candidate pool database instead of having to sift through individual resumes and applications...and the obvious lack of headache for the applicant.
As for state regulations, a custom page could be made for each state, and it would be submitted for an application for a job in that state.

I think that would be wonderful, at least it could work for the pre screening process.

passwords for this, passwords for that...how many do we need? Even if we use the same one its overkill. What is a person without a computer or without computer knowledge to do? My first thought is that the government should start this "national registry" but we all know how they design things.

The problem is not everyone have the expertise, knowledge, experience and skills to do it, not to mention the common sense.

But then there are those with 'why should big brother have all my information even though they could find them if need to', etc...

Ah, yes, the "good old days" of the Common App which is....a whopping ten years old.
For the business world there are services like Taleo which use a common language and you can input your resume data which it will save. Obviously not all employers find such boilerplate formats useful for them. I imagine that the number of employers that use boilerplate applications is no less than the number of colleges that do (only about 10% of colleges in the US currently use common app).
