Anybody else here hate nepotism? Theres this girl who works where I work...
her position is "assistant controller" (i searched and this position makes like 50k on average depending on the company) and yes, she dropped out of college (WVU, a mediocre school) because she partied too much. BUT her dad is reaaaalllyy high up in the company. Funny how she's gotten 2 big promotions in the span of 2 years, conveniently after she dropped out.
Also there's a rumor she hooked up with some manager who has a wife and kids.
Also she is awful at doing her job, doesn't do crap.
Yes, I can relate and from experience at a large multi-national corporation. Examples;
1) The head of staff human resources had two sons that worked at the plant. Surprisingly both sons rose to manager level in a very short time. I was never impressed with either of their work ethic or ability.
2) The company had trouble with the EEOC regarding women in management positions. Quality manager brought in a "friend of the family" who had just graduated a mediocre school with a degree in marketing who rose from "temporary" to manager of quality engineering. This woman had no experience or engineering education and within two years was a manager.
3) Same story with other women at the plant- one minute they are a secretary sleeping with a manager and the next minute they are "section managers".
I was surprised it would have been like that at a big company but the nepotism was bad.
Nepotism is human nature. It's going to happen (for better or worse). Just ignore it or embrace it. Don't be afraid to use it to your benefit if you need. That's the way I look at it.
Well if you had the power to give someone an easier ride because you knew they would die on their own, would you do it? Or not do it, knowing they would blame you for all eternity for not giving them a chance? And don't forget, some people do it so they look better as in her dad doesn't want her flipping burgers because that would make him look bad. Or maybe he's just waiting for her to marry off then he'll can her once she gets supported.
I don't really care if the relative was far removed boss but if it was someone in the same organization, that could be a bit annoying.
Unless you could use it to your advantage which might be a good idea.
Yeah I understand both sides of the argument. It is what it is, I'm not too jealous of her, I'll probably be more successful than her anyway. Just mad because I don't like her.
I work with a group of people who are related like a Hillbilly wedding. One is a cousin, whose son is married to the secretary, and they are all either cousins or married to one of the sisters, or cousins, or whatever, I can't keep it straight. They all laugh and joke about things I don't understand, and people I don't know. Because I am not part of the "genetic pool", I am pretty much out of the loop. That is okay, I do my work.

That's why I think experience is a bit overrated in most fields and that employers shouldn't be too picky(especially these days) because most jobs can be taught in a span of about 2 weeks.
People rack up school loans then become in debt and can't find a job when they are likely to be skilled at doing.
This is always a risk when you work at places with more than one family member.
At one job, I worked with the boss's son. He came in hung over, drunk, and could barely function. But he was the owner's son so we all had to suck it up. I am sure he made great money for doing very little, but his dad was trying very hard to keep him working and get him on the straight and narrow.
He could have just let the guy party and use his allowance to get stoned, I suppose.
At another place, we only had about 5 employees. One was the daughter of the owner. She received preferential treatment, heck yeah. But her mother also was pretty hard on her and I got the impression they didn't really get along. She was also jealous of her older sister who had a successful business and was a separate entity from Mom's control.
So, yeah, nepotism stinks but it's not going away.

Consider it a blessing because you probably don't want to be in that pool to begin with.

Yeah unfortunately employers have the luxury of being as picky as they want in today's economy... anyone think that isn't a true statement?
