I am just curious as to those that live in some what of a rural/mountainous region do for a living.

I really enjoy the mountains. I have been through many towns and small cities in these type environments and I have always wondered what in the world do people do to make a living when basically there is nothing around. Not many businesses. Not much but hotels, restaurants, and touristy type jobs.

How in the world do people make a living in these areas. With it being so isolated and far from any major cities. What kind of jobs are available in these types of areas?

Or do mainly people just retire in these types of areas

Thanks.

I wonder the same thing when I travel in rural areas that have towns so small that if you blink you miss the blinking traffic light. Where do these people work that live in BFE?

I'm living close to the Cascades... plenty of mountains with a 14,400 ft. volcano named Mt. Rainier dominating the sky on a clear day.

Plenty of work down here in the valleys for the manufacturing work I do... Boeing is everywhere. Up in the mountains there isn't a lot of anything except snow... Mt. Rainier and Mt. Baker are two of the snowiest places in the world... and that keeps the ski resorts busy.

They either work on the family's farm or they work at the local grocery store or whatever and live in a beat up old shack, possibly collecting government subsidies.

My grandfather lives in Mississippi and has a soybean farm about half an hour from the nearest town... which as of 2010 has a population of 390.

That farm has been in the family for generations. He inherited the place from his father.

You also encounter people mining/cutting for natural resources or building connective infrastructure, like high tension power lines.

Rip off Flatlanders.
Get relief from the government.
Do nothing. Spend your life trying to find work.
So seasonal work (see first one on the list).

These are common things from some mountain place I used to live in.

As do I... and that's a perk of living in Washington state. Because you said that I want to share a couple photos I took on hiking trips last year.

The first is Mt. St. Helens on September 9th taken from about 8 miles away.

This is Mt. Rainier taken from an elevation of about 7,000 ft. on August 28th.

Teaching is another big job in those small towns. If you are lucky you have a business or job that lets you telecommute.

Does living in an urbanized valley count? Here in Utah County, people navigate based on big mountains to the east, little mountains to the west. And where I am, Timpanogos to the north also applies. I work in a warehouse for a home security company. In rural Utah most of the economy is driven by farming, oil, and mining.
