My friends who graduated with degrees in sociology (with concentrations in early childhood development) currently work as counselors and social workers for schools and charitable organizations. If you have the time/resources before looking for a job, temporarily volunteer as a counselor for a local youth organization. The YMCA or Boys & Girls Club may have something for you to do. Any recent experience you can put on your resume will work in your favor. Also, inner cities with tough to manage kids and low salaries have more positions open than the suburbs. If you are close to a city with a substantial population of low income residents, you should look for work there.
