Not sure if this should be in education or this forum?
I am looking into taking some online classes to get a certified electronic health records specialist certification (CEHRS) and / or maybe coding or medical billing classes.
The class at our community college is online and costs around $1500. Is it worth the time and money?
What other types of certifications would you recommend getting to get work in medical administration / clerical jobs?
It seems like these are 90% of the jobs around my area now are at hospitals. Although I do notice that most of the job descriptions seem to want 6 months to a year experience. How do you get a job in a medical office w/o experience? I have regular admin skills but those are not what anyone wants.
Anyone work in a medical office or do medical billing or coding?
I do inpatient and outpatient coding and billing in a SA/BH facility. I did take courses in medical billing/coding and I plan to obtain my certification soon because I feel that will be a requirement if I plan to stay marketable in this industry. Ultimately I would like to transition into working as a patient advocate to help people who have problems with Medicaid/Medicare/Commerical insurance.
I think an EHR certification would be good to have. There are a lot of changes going on right now in transitioning medical records from the traditional charts to EHR/EMR along with the upcoming meaningful use requirements for physicians.
You should try getting a job in a private practice doing filing in their medical records department. This will give you the "experience" you can put on your resume and you can get a feel of what goes on in the "back office". That way you can make an informed decision before you go spending money on getting certified.
If you are interested in medical billing/coding you should check out the AAPC website as well as the one for AHIMA.
