I hope this isn't too private, but I'm seriously having a mid-midlife crisis, and I don't know what to do/what I want to do anymore. I'm having second thoughts about spending my life doing what my BS is in, mostly because the job process has been one blow after the other...
Just thought I could get a few ideas about other jobs from people on this board
I have a 73 year old friend that was a RN [ret/burned out after 30 years] then because she was still young & healthy spent the next 20 years cleaning in hospitals [ret] then spent 5 years as maid in motels, 3 years at mcDonalds 4 years ago doctors told her that was it! She is 72! She collects checks from the 2 places that she ret from plus SS! And mad because cancer beat her!
Do what makes you happy...but if you are close to the pinson goal then at least stick it out until then.
What interests you? What would you REALLY like to be doing? Can you invest in the training needed to work in that field? I joined the USAF at age 19, with no idea in the world what I wanted to do; spent the next 23 years in aircraft maintenance. Would've never imagined myself fixing airplanes, but I really enjoyed it in the military. Decided I didn't want to do it after I retired. But I DID always want to see what driving a big rig was like. That was 10 years ago and I STILL love going to work every night. I did the long haul thing for my first five years. I enjoyed the variety of loads and seeing all 48 states/Canada. But now I'm home every day and I enjoy the dedicated retail account I'm on. Trucking DEFINITELY is not for everyone, though.
I spent a couple of years working in payroll, then the next 11 years as an admin assistant, then was promoted to a human resources specialist for two years, then changed employers and worked as an in-house software trainer/technical support person.
Then at the age of 39, got married and moved 1100 miles from the only city I had ever called home. At the same time, the bottom fell out of the IT market - tech support jobs were being outsourced overseas. I worked a contract job as tech support for a bank for about a year and a half, then did some work at home stuff until I could find what I really wanted.
I told hubby I was tired of working for big corporations. There's no job security in it anymore, and hadn't been for a while. I wanted to work for a small "mom & pop" company in an office management position. Never mind that I didn't have any experience at it, I was going to do it.
I ended up interviewing for a part-time position, fell in love with the place immediately, and was offered the job. I told my husband I would work there for a year to get some good experience, then find a full-time job.
Well, it's been three years now, and I haven't left. I have no intention to leave. I have the best boss in the world, I love coming to work every day, and I feel like I'm making a difference. A while back I asked him why he hired me, even though I had no bookkeeping experience. He said he knew I really wanted the job, and the fact that I had such a varied background told him I could learn it pretty easily. Plus he liked my computer experience. It's still part-time, but that's ok. Even my husband says I'm never allowed to leave the company - it's THAT good.
I am in finance/consulting and I do enjoy it. I enjoy the fact that I get to work with a variety of companies, so there is always new challanges. OP, what is it that you do now?
What's my job? Now, are we talking officially what do I do or what I'm made to do?
Here's what I currently do ((all at one time)) -
Programmer - Visual Basic, Visual Fox, and C++ Technical Data Specialist - Now, this aspect has a lot of functions. We, as a company, track the Calibrated items of the Navy ((ENTIRE navy)).. and my job is to ensure the quality of the data and ensure that EVERY calibration lab has up-to-date information Admin Asst - We fired the old one... so I have to do the stuff she did.
Though, I'm seriously pondering over quitting - I do the job of 3 people and get paid for the cheapest of the 3... I usually end up putting in about 60-70 hours a week and get paid for 40.

Hi nl2134, I had that crisis too, but it hit me at an earlier age, I decided to quit what I was doing and pursue my dreams, took me some time to gather the courage to talk to my boss and resign, but it's one of the best things I've done in my life, 7 years have passed since I took that decision, it took me sometime for my dreams starting to become true but it was well worth it!!
I work in the music industry, basically these are the things I do.
1 make music and play around the world
2 give musical production courses to people who wants to pursue the same dream I had
3 give consulting for acoustic treatment in recording / post production studios,
4 import highly specialized studio equipment, usually my customers are my pupils too.
I'd suggest you to have a good talk with your inner self, try to find out what's your dream what do you really want, we all have an special purpose to fulfill but you have to find it, and when you do, have faith and keep trying, good luck best wishes!
