I think you should have to have that 'piece of paper' to be considered for positions at a certain level.
I have a few older VP's at work who have little to no formal education. I think it's because when they were building their careers, it was more about if you were actually good at it and the education wasn't a huge limiting factor.
I have nothing against where and what you come from. One of our best "engineers" is completely self taught and one of the most brilliant people in my office. He's scared to ever leave because nobody would ever look at him because of his lack of formal education, even though he's designed some of our most successful products.
