There has been lots of posts from people on City Data recently about the movement away from cubicles toward an open office environment. Most of the posters seem to hate the open office environment.

I wonder just how common the trend towards an open office environment really is. Please take my poll and lets discuss the pros and cons of each option. Thanks!

I have an office with a door. If only I had a window.

I'm in the midst of moving my lab space from one building, to a brand new building my company just built.

So i have two cubes.

My current one is big, with high walls and lots of privacy.

My new cube is smaller, with glass half-walls. They also arranged it so that 4 cubes are central to a large table for "collaboration". The actual storage area in the cube itself is smaller, and it's less private.

Also, there are several "googlesque" collaborative zones in the are with sofa chairs and white boards and tables.

Personally...i hate it

Managers have offices, the rest individual cubicles. I am lucky enough to have a 3rd floor window office with views of the water, downtown skyline and Olympic mountains. Makes it a lot more enjoyable to work every day.

Currently, we all have offices with doors.

When the fancy-pants new building is finished in a few years, everyone who is under a level-2 manager level will be in cubes. They promise we'll just love it....

At my current job I have my own office, for the more entry level people they have to share an office and the most I have seen is three in a office.

My old job used to have cubicles for the majority of people and offices for the managers but they were taken over by another company and in addition to laying off nearly half of the staff, they are in the process of changing to an open office environment and I believe even the managers are getting kicked out of their offices. I've seen a few pictures and it doesn't look great.

I'm in my first open office job now, for the past 6 months. I hate it with every fiber of my being.

Neither cubes nor office - it is a trade floor style workplace with just rows of desks with no physical boundary of your space. Everyone has same desks and space, Analysts through Managing Directors. Only Heads of Biz have offices.

When we moved buildings about a year ago, most of us got our own private offices. There has been an accompanying sharp increase in productivity.
