Thinking about everyone I knew at my university, I would say that a good third of my friends got jobs through their parents or because of some type of connections. Some people received offers from their internships and the rest for the most part went to graduate school to delay having to find a job.
People get jobs everyday without connections. Is it easy? No. One has to work harder and be smarter and more strategic to get a job without a connection. No excuses...
Good luck

Lol I'm not looking for one. I was just wondering what people thought about it in general.
I've only been hired for one job (out of nine) because a friend knew of a job opening and knew the department director, and that was a faint connection to boot.

I have never gotten a job due to a connection, nor would I want to. I would feel obligated to stay there if I didn't like it or something better came along, and I would not want to be given preferential treatment, but prefer to feel like I got a job on my own merit.
Experience, being presentable and having a solid track record is a very important and can trump connections. Also, getting in and keeping the position and moving up is important. Getting in and keeping the position and growing if applicable are different.

It can be done but it takes a little luck sometime which means noticing the job ad at the right time.
All of my jobs post-college have been decent and I didn't get any of them through connections.
