I am probably one of the few that JUST wants a true "temp" job. Or a series of temp jobs. I don't necessarily want temp to hire, I want short term temp to make some extra money without the commitment of a job that is semi permanent. I want to work a lot over the summer then be able to leave or have the job end when I return to school in the Fall.

I am just noticing that there hardly ever seem to be any true "temporary" assignments anymore offered by staffing agencies. It is almost all temp to hire. Is this just my area? Many years ago I used to get temp jobs that lasted from 3 days to 2 weeks and I loved it. I could reject an assignment but usually did not, because I'd get a steady flow of work with a few days off here and there before the next assignment.

Ditto for me is the problem of finding more extreme part time work. I need (right now) to work maybe 15 to 20 hours a week. Not 30, which is what almost all the part time jobs want.

I think there are still plenty of temp jobs out there. Check with Craigslist for freelance work and hit up Robert Half, Kelly Services, Office Team, and Accoutemps for the kind of work you're looking for.

Have you checked with local colleges? Many have temp jobs that last a few weeks to a few months.

This is a funny(odd) thread ... There have been many threads that complain just the opposite is the case, they want permanent jobs but find they are really "long-term temporary" jobs.

Myself, I have not found this to be the case in either scenario, if you want a true temp job there are many(my employer has them, 45 days max), if you want the job to be perm they are there too but many Companies do the "temp to hire" route because it is much easier and cheaper in the long run to go that way.

When you list with the "Temp" agency make sure they know which type of job you want and make sure you add your pay requirements too(be reasonable) ... Anything will get you just that for both.

I speak from personal experience, so I know of what I speak.

An aside; do NOT go to Craigslist for a job. Google "Ohio Craigslist murders" that and many(most) are just scams.

Yeah there will be posters that tell me I am nuts, but ....

Where would you suggest someone go to find jobs? I've found my last two positions on CL and got all my responses from the replies I sent to CL. I tried indeed.com, careerbuilder, monsterjobs, and did not get ONE response from any of those. I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm really curious because I've seen other comments that CL is not the way to find a job.

My employer only advertises open positions on Craigslist.

I got my position via word of mouth after a friend interviewed but didn't like the hours.. After he responded to the CL ad.

I got the info... made the call... and got the job. I work in machining... Mostly aerospace making parts for companies that deal with Boeing. Far from being a McJob.

These days it seems that whatever you're looking for, they've only got the opposite available in your area!

In the past, I think more employers hired short-term temps to fill-in for vacations and leaves. I got a lot of work that way on school breaks and summers. Now, I think they are just "making do" with the employees that they have until the person returns.

That said, I just got a call from a very small staffing agency who provides temps for a large corporation, specifically for the summer vacation period. They send her over a schedule of what weeks they'll need people, and she tries to fill it with one or more temps.

Well, you just have to be smart about it, when you reply to CL ads. Many legitimate companies use CL because it is a very fast, cheap way to reach a lot of potential employees. I've seen quite a few national temp agencies post jobs on there -- but they use their real email address. Other companies have done the same.

For blind ads, if you're not sure about them, edit the contact info on your resume so that it just has your name and email address. If you think you've gotten a spam reply, there are a few websites out there that post the scams so you'll know for sure that its' NOT legit.

We use temps from AppleOne, and while most of them are looking for a permanent job,
we may have the same person back again for another assignment but only use them as temps.

Temporary placement has had 25 years in the USA to mature, and about 1995 - 2000 got really going in western Canada. The "concept" is that both parties have choices: you get to see the employer and they get to see you. Surprisingly, the employer often forgets this approach cuts both ways until his really good worker is suddenly unavailable!
It's never made any economic sense to me unless you're in a HOT economy, which the USA was in the late eighties/early nineties, hence the rise of "Labor Ready" and others.

I have two long-time friends that make it work for them, but even they refer to Temp. Employ. as the "New Slave Labor"!
One floats unloading trucks in Calgary, and keeps an eye for US trucks whose dispatched unloader doesn't show, and then unloads for cash. Usually the warehouse doesn't object, as they just want the door open. The other guy is functionally illiterate but a hell of a worker, and this is his way into the labour pool.

What happened in western Canada's construction industry is that it's now almost universal, as companies are spending other people's money, so there isn't any incentive to hire. It's also a great way to hide: if your company has no employees, it is much more difficult for Revenue Canada or the IRS to find you. As in "The Usual Suspects" you can't be betrayed if you have no people.

The Olympics? I got my brother in through Appleone which had an employment contract. New in town? A great way to jump into the employment pool. But employers still seem to have difficulties figuring temp employment out. When I owned a moving company there wasn't a chance I'd use temporary people. I'm handling other people's belongings and I need to know where these employees are if I need to find them.

Saving 4% or 6% Workmens' Compensation insurance doesn't account for the use of temporary labour, and you usually have to have five people for every two or three trained/familiar personnel they replace. Head office often forced temp employees on sites and I'd have to spend an extra hour of my day checking on them! No thanks.
