Not necessarily. There is a such thing as virtual volunteerism as I have just found. I've already applied to several non-profits through VolunteerMatch.org and I've gotten 3 responses so far.
Well yes that maybe a option which would definitley eliminate travel costs
I don't have the time or money to volunteer. Strange how this is pushed on perpetually unemployed people. Do the people who parrot this have any idea what it's like finding volunteer work? You don't just go somewhere and start doing something. You have to prove you are good enough for free labor too when there's competition for it. It's all BS.

And if you're unemployed, how do you not have the time?
Its really your call. When you have the will, you find the way. I need to learn some new skills that will allow me to move into a new career direction. I found no less than 8 virtual volunteer opportunities just yesterday offering exactly what I need from home. 3 already responded asking for my resume and availability.
If that's BS to you, don't do it. Come up with other solutions.

Volunteering should only be done on the weekends if someone decides to do it

WRONG. You definitely have the TIME to volunteer. Each day has 24 hours. You need 8 hours of it to sleep. As to food, well somehow you are eating anyway, so if you have to, bring a bag lunch from home to your volunteer job. Most volunteer jobs are not full time jobs, so there is still time for you to apply to other real jobs.
As to a lack of money for volunteering, well unless you live way out in the boonies, in towns and cities, many volunteer jobs are accessible by bicycle or foot. Many volunteer jobs are located in churches. Or other volunteers will be willing to carpool with other volunteers.
Anyway, as I replied to parried (aka the banned user silenthelpreturns) in another thread, if you have the time and the energy to hold up signs at street intersections begging for work, you have the time to do productive volunteer work.

Agreed 100%
