I was killing time at the local mall and saw that all the retail stores were looking for Christmas ("Holiday" for the PC crowd) Help. Many appeared to be just plain desparate and were putting signs everywhere. It seems like if they were short on help they would just raise the pay and get more applicants. I was told that most places pay just minimum wage and after commuting costs, parking, taxes and social security, their would be little left.

Would they hire someone who is over 50 and does not speak Spanish? How much would I really make an hour?

I worked in a furniture store a few years ago to make extra money and worked during the holiday season. I did get paid extra for working Christmas Eve and New Year's Day but I didn't get anything extra for working the holiday season. Pay was $11.50/hr. Most retail stores don't pay more than $9.00/hr (at least in Massachusetts, they don't). You'll work CRAZY hours. My sister worked retail during the holiday season 3 years ago. Some nights she worked until 1:00 in the morning.
