For those that have accepted jobs recently, how did you answer these two questions?

How does the job fit into your career goals?

Why are you interested in the job?

Short (and sweet) is how I keep my responses so assuming the position I am seeking is Community Liaison, here is how I would answer questions 1 and 2:

- Well, I am pursuing my Graduate Degree in Public Policy and the fact that this job deals directly with the public sector by producing and disseminating materials and information pertaining to school programs to its various publics, it is right up my alley.

- I am interested in the job because I beleive I can contribute meaningfully to the success of your company and that my skills and values match perfectly.

I once got the job of the century by saying, "Well, ya gotta eat."
I don't think anyone ever said that at such a prestigious job. I think they were charmed by my greenhorn primativism. I'd never say such a thing now. Oh, and I also aced the test they gave me.

I suggest above OP read these out loud and find a way to say the same thing in a normal conversation way and not in "biz-resume speak." Likely, if speaking, it would be a more natural style anyway. Contractions are your friend "I'm."

I answered the questions like this:

"This job fits my career goals as I have studied planning in the western US and want to work in the western US, which is also why I'm interested in this job. The _____ _____ has continued to see growth even during the economic downturn, and would be a great place to start my career in planning and help it grow even more."

This is a city government position.

I usually lie through my teeth to be honest, since the only jobs I qualify for at the moment are retail and food service. I don't want anything to do with these positions but I'm stuck there until I either come up with money for a new degree or get lucky and land a job in accounting/finance that doesn't deal with sales or customers.
