Ala title. I'm starting a new position in two weeks and a few days, and was wondering if it would be better to turn in my 2-week notice now versus turning it in this Friday (two weeks exactly).

Thanks all

honestly, it doesn't really make a difference, especially if you work somewhere where you know people don't get fired as soon as they give notice.

if you do work somewhere where they fire people, you might want to wait because they will probably only pay you 2 weeks' severance and you might as well get paid for that extra few days.

congrats on the new job!

I always give two weeks, no more and no less.

Two weeks, period, unless you have a contract or agreement that specifies otherwise.

It depends on your relationship with your employer now and what you hope to have in the future. I have had a situation where I gave 8 months notice, and it worked out great. I have also walked off a job without any regret or subsequent problem.

Two weeks is standard for most jobs, but if your position is difficult to fill or your responsibilities tricky to transition to someone else, you may get some goodwill chips for giving more notice to your employer even if you are not required to do so. On the other hand, if you already have a poor relationship with the employer and do not expect or need much in terms of future references or networking opportunities, two weeks or less will be fine depending on how much you want to "stick it to da man" as they say.

I suggest burning your bridges only with the greatest caution, and doing all you can to maintain even a neutral relationship. The odds are against your getting fired after giving a short notice (and 2 weeks even if standard is still pretty short notice). You have more to gain and less to lose by playing nicely with your employer and making your exit smooth and gracious for everybody.

If it was a job where I know from other people giving notice they don't ask you to leave that day or treat you like crap I would just tell them tomorrow. If not I would give exactly two weeks.

Thanks for the advice all, they don't seem to boot people out after the notice is given. There's no specified timeline given in my "contract" (at-will, says leave with or without notice at any time), so I may just put in tomorrow or Thursday.

There are literally 15 to 20 other coworkers at the same level so I'm not terribly worried about training anyone else. I'm excited to move on!

Give it earlier so you get a long weekend before the new job starts!

Give it now. It won't hurt you, might help your current employer a bit, and they may think of you fondly in the future.
