Hey Guys! I had a quick question.
After an internship and several temp jobs, I just found out that I got a position as an editorial assistant at a major publishing house. I'm super excited, and they are having me in to give me their "official offer." Should I try to negotiate? As someone who was stoked to get $10 an hour at their current, temporary job (sad, I know), it seems crazy to me to try and get to more money at a salaried job with benefits (not that editorial assistants make that much, but still). Then again, I don't want to end up regretting not being more assertive. What do you guys think? Did you negotiate your first salary, especially if you were an assistant of some kind?

Go online and read about professional ways to negotiate tactfully.

yep, you should absolutely negotiate. it's totally normal. if you don't negotiate, you might be leaving money on the table.

you may need to be able to back up what you're asking for, so do some research into comparable salaries in your local area. what you need isn't really relevant, the prevailing market rate for your work is. you need to stay friendly and positive, but also confident in what you are asking for, and know when to stop talking. and if they say it's not negotiable, and you're still fine with the pay, then take it!

Unless they specifically state that pay is non-negotiable, you should always negotiate pay.
