I don't know why this happened last night. I'm supposed to be getting ready to work in 2 hours for an 8.5 hour shift but I only slept for 2 hours. I'm not sure if it's because I was stressed or had too much coffee yesterday. I'm not sure what to tell the boss when I call him. One of the other supervisors dropped by yesterday and saw me and knew I was well and not sick, which might cause a discussion if I called in and just said I was sick. Is it okay to tell him I didn't get enough sleep and I know I won't be able to function well and work as fast as I could? Should I word it differently? It's a retail job btw.

Drink some coffee or down one of those 5 hour "pick-up" potions and get yourself into work! You're seriously playing with fire to do otherwise.

In retail sometimes they will schedule you to close then open the next day. You won't have time to sleep more than maybe 2 hours between shifts. You have to go anyway. I almost wrecked once driving home from work because I didn't have any real chance to sleep within the past 24 hours. And you'll get paid minimum wage for all this. Isn't having a job great?

One of the disadvantages to retail work, you are expected to show up unless you are dripping blood or throwing up all over the place. While that's not really fair, it's the way it is, and if you want to keep that job I would get to work. That little sleep is better than none, and as long as you get a good rest tonight you shouldn't really be that affected unless you are really old. I remember in my 20s working all day after no sleep at times, either from studying in college or just staying out all night.

Go to work.

It'll suck, but it'll feel good when you crash tonight. If you stay in bed all day, you'll throw yourself off for tomorrow.

I've had many sleepless nights and 1-3 hours sleep nights on the regular (I have some anxiety and hardly sleep), and the one thing that actually hurts is sleeping in too late or too much during the day. Just drink lots of water, eat healthy, and try and stay active by walking laps around the store if you can. You'll be FINE.

I've gone to work on 2 hours of sleep before. You feel like crap, but it's doable. Lots of coffee helps!

You can jump in bed as soon as you get home in the afternoon.

If you were operating machinery, you definitely shouldn't go in.

You could be honest and say you had a bad night last night or you could see how it goes - sometimes people stay in their rhythm for the next day but fall hard that next night.

Go to the doctors for insomnia and get a note. Otherwise, your going to have to grind through the day.

Yep, it's such a drag that employers in general expect you to be at work unless you're sick ... so very inhumane!
