What Marilyn 220 posted is interesting and also true. In cities like NY, there is something of a history of straight men going "gay for pay." Among the most famous examples among counterculture types are Dee Dee Ramone and Jim Carroll who did it to pay the bills in the 'bad old days' of the 60s and 70s. Until Times Square was cleaned up as well, it was not uncommon for women to work the strip clubs and topless bars so they or their boyfriends could pursue their art.
More recently, you can find examples of W4M and M4M prostitution on Craigslist, which, although it is technically illegal to post it there, is where the majority of it has moved to.
