My friend's sister in law works as a dentist assistant and did not get a degree or take most of the tests except for a few tests including the RDA Test. She didn't have any experience except cleaning the instruments for the tools, now working up to the next level as a dentist assistant making $18-20 a hour at Western Dental.
So my friend wants to know how come she went through the schooling got the degree, took 8 different tests, and yet she does not have a job as a dental assistant. So why does her sister in law find this job with little to no experience or anything and she has all this stuff including being a U.S. citizen but doesn't get work.
Luck, networking, being likeable, being attractive, being more aggressive in a job search, living in a city with more demand than employees in that field....
Tons of reasons.
I have a boss now who hires based upon potential. Maybe the boss thought sister-in-law had potential to learn?
What do you mean by Career VS. Non-career but Working that Field...? It seems like the one has education, little experience and the other has more experience working in the field but less education. In this scenario the non-career is the one that is not working in the field (your friend).....
One of my friends is an accountant-she makes 65k a year-she doesn't have an accounting degree. She received the job when the unemployment was 4.4% and her employer trained her. My family member attended nursing school and was unemployed for almost 2 years ( I believe) she found a job in a little crap town..she makes 15.00 an hour-
What I meant was that my friend has the schooling, degree, and no experience but yet can't find a job in this field. While the sister in law who has no experience or a degree does have a job in the same field.

Can you ask your sister in law about helping your friend out with a job? Your SIL might be able to put in a good word so that your friend may at least get a quick interview with someone.

See bolded. That's why.
Many Dentist's prefer the assistants without schooling so they can train them "their" way, but most want their assistants with on the job experience so they don't have to train them. She may be falling into the lovely gray area of school but no experience. It's neither fair nor right but it is what it is. Tell her to keep trying. Not sure where she lives but trying to get in with a Dental Temp agency would be a good way to get her foot in the door and gain some experience. Has she hand delivered her resume to every single office in town? Tell her to dress in business casual and go door to door. Did she do an externship during her schooling?
Also, keep in mind that the dental field is experience the same lack of jobs that many other fields are so the employers can be very picky about who they hire.
