I just started a position with my current employer about 5 months and found out that I've been severely underpaid. Probably get around 16 days of PTO. Company culture and working environment isn't all that great as well.
Anyway another company has made a offer to me of $12k more, plus a $4k bonus after one year of employment, 4 weeks PTO, and they paid a significant amount of med/dental.
I'm concerned about going into an unknown...it could possibility be worst than were I am currently. If I decide to take it, should I let my manager know and see if they'll fire back with a counter offer?
Any time you take a new job, there is an element of the unknown. Have you done as much due diligence as possible on the prospective new employer? Is the work more attractive to you than where you are now?
A counter-offer from your current employer is unlikely, unless you have proven to be exceptional to the point of nearly irreplaceable over the past 5 months.
You need to figure out all the worst case scenario, and decide if you can handle it or not. For example, can you deal with bad manager who doesn't care about you, can you deal with co-worker that who doesn't do any job and simply throw it all to you, can you deal with possibility of everyone giving you a hard time, etc... Once you are able to answer these questions, and know what to do, then yes, you should take that new job. There is always trade off, is the matter of you accepting the trade off or not.
The best way to get a pay increase is to switch jobs. I doubt your current company could match because it's money, PTO and benefits that are all better. Besides, you said you aren't that happy in your current job. And experts say it's best just to take the other offer instead of trying to get current job to match because current job then knows you've been looking and they might try to replace you soon before you find yet another offer.
IMO, there is enough chance that the new job is better than the current job. Or equal.
Since you already know you are underpaid and unhappy at the current job, might as well take the new job.
In 8-12 months if you aren't happy at the new job, then you start looking again.
I think you are just afraid of the unknown. Which most people are - it's human nature.
Wait, to sound luke warm to your current job, so what's the problem?? In these days, it has to be about the money. I say go for it, it's not like your current job is amazing.
