I work for a company where some times I have to drive the truck out of town for pick ups, there are times I don't get to the hotel until after my normal stop time which is 5 o'clock. I keep asking my employer for some kind of compensation for this time and he keep telling me because he is paying for the room and food he does not have to pay me for any time past 5 o'clock. I wanted to know what is the employer suppose to pay for is this case.
Are you hourly I take it? If you are salary, that's part of being salary.
If he is paying for the truck, room, and food, that is decent. However, do you not get there past 5 due to taking longer breaks, or would it be physically impossibly to get there by 5pm?
However, what we think he "should" do, and what he wants or has to do, are two different things. If he needs you, then be more forceful in telling him what you want. If you are expendable, that's your own choice if you want to risk potentially losing your job for someone that won't press that issue.
If I was hourly I would want to get paid for every hour I worked. That would include driving a truck for my company. Who cares that he pays for hotel and food. You aren't on vacation. He should be paying for that.
