I filed for bankruptcy 5 years ago and have re-established credit since. I'm interviewing for jobs in the accounting and finance areas. How do you think my chances of landing a new job are ?

Filed for BK due to job lose and medical bills but have rebuilt credit to score over 700 since. I have excellent references and stellar annual reviews prior to, during and after discharge.

BK isn't nearly as much of an issue as it used to be prior to the financial crisis in ~2008 since millions of American's filed for BK. I wouldn't worry too much about it, it will come up during a background check but given your current credit the BK will most likely not be a significant issue.

It would depend on the job itself, as accounting and jobs in the financial industry will likely have more stringent requirements than in other industries.

I happen to know there is at least one major financial/investments company that's really picky about that, their name begins with an "F".

We'll I'm going to find out soon. I've been offered a job contingent on background check. I also have 2 others that are in the final stages. I'm going to call the hiring manager and let them know what they're going to find.

Good luck! I dont know that I'd offer any info about a bankruptcy, though, unless your intention is to explain why you had to file. And, even then, I dont think I'd say anything.

Odds are they will find out about a bankruptcy, it is on your court records and on your credit report, so you may as well explain what happened.

That being said if it was a few years ago, and you have rebuilt your credit, then I doubt too many companies will really care. Plenty of people have went through bankruptcy over the last 7 years, and they all seem to find jobs. As long as you were not involved in anything criminal or fraudulent then you should be fine.

Well, tried to call the hiring manager before the background check but no luck just to get it out of the way. Submitted the forms and just heard back, no issues or questions. They want me to start in 2 weeks. Great, right ? Well not really, I'm not crazy about the job or the company but I guess I really shouldn't complain - beats not having a check.
