I interviewed for a position in another city. After dancing around with each other for a few months, the company tossed out a proposal (i.e., salary figure and other perks) and asked me if I thought we were close to the same page. I thought we were, so they paid my travel expenses to go for an in-person visit. The day went well and when I returned home, I even had a few emails from some of the people with whom I'd met. I did my due diligence, sent my thank-yous, sent an email to my contact (a former colleague) who was responsible for bringing me in there. I received replies to almost all my thank-you notes as well.

It's not been that long since I flew to the other city but for some reason, I thought I'd hear something before this. Truthfully, they haven't moved very quickly so far, so I don't know why I was expecting the process to speed up now. But I'm a bit on pins and needles. I found some relevant articles and sent them over to two people. But beyond that, I firmly believe that once you send the thank-you note, that's it. No more contact--no checking in to see what's up, etc.

So, just venting. Any thoughts?

I think you should call them and ask how the decision making is going. Do you have a contact in HR? My belief is that a later phone call, after the thank you note, does nothing but enforce the interest you have in the position. I have always done that and have never had anyone tell me that I was a pest.

They might have a hiring freeze right now. It seems like everywhere around here that was looking for people in September or October now seems to be having a 'wait and see' policy or only promoting from within.
