if you only want raise and promotion you need to go out on your own, not all company give raise and promotion, some you will be in the same position has you hired on at. which is ok. raises are giving for what you are worth to the company and some on how good you can suck up, yes its true.
But raises will only get to a certain point and then they will stop all together, the company still have to make a profit and labor is one of the biggest factor. If all you want is raises and promotion it be better to hire on at the wage that you will be happy with at the beginning, once you get train and some skill, they usually go up some. I haven't got a raise in nine years and don't reall expect any, because I'm at the top of the ladder. The more people that suck up in front of you will drain the raise fund so you will need to get a skill that nobody else have.
