When someone gets hired on somewhere, are they under the microscope by the hiring manager for a while? How often are they asking about their performance and how closely are they being looked at?

That will vary greatly. I just hired a new person and have another starting the week after next. We have a 5 month probationary period and an opportunity for up to a 4% raise at the end of that time. That provides a lot of motivation but I still have to monitor their work closely during that time and make sure they are given proper training. Despite the 3 years experience required, they have to learn our processes and procedures. It would be rare for someone to ask about their performance, because I give them regular feedback based on their work that I review, and comments from other people they work with.
