STEM is so broad... I agree that certain areas are over-saturated but would have to really dig in to the research to understand it on a broader level.
At the anecdotal level, I have a BSME and PE and mostly work in industrial, biotech, data centers etc. I have multiple people calling/emailing me every week for full-time, non-contract positions all over the US and this has been the case for the last 7-8 years probably, once the economy started picking back up.
Bobsell in this thread is not using anecdotal evidence to prove that people should avoid STEM if they want a stable career and a good paying job. Sheerbliss is also not using anecdotal evidence.
Can you name the magical job field that is 100% stable and most jobs pay well?
STEM IS NOT A GUARANTEE of a good life. I have a BSME from a Top 6 college yet my life has had many bouts of unemployment.
Really? My DH graduated from Purdue as a Mechanical Engineer and has been with the same company for almost 20 years. They actually have a hard time trying to find good experienced engineers. The company is about 30 miles from Chicago. Where are you located? Location is key!
BTW, my husband makes a six figure base salary with a 15% annual salary bonus! He also has fantastic benefits, gets 4 weeks PTO and can occasionally work from home. He travels 1 week a month to different facilities in the U.S., but also travels to places such as Germany, China, U.K., France and Canada. From what I understand, none of his colleges are H1B workers. It's a tight group so I would think he would know.
20 years at one job is not the norm in STEM. Not by a long shot.
I have met many people that have spent 20 years and longer at one company. Granted, they are older than 40, but they have been with the same company.
I know others my age (30's), in STEM that have been employed longer than 10 years with the same company.
