She wasn't being rude. She said it's never happened before, and it caught her by surprise. She's not in the habit of interacting with strangers off the street, traisping through the whole suite, and finding her, tucked back from human interaction for the most part.
I'm pretty sure it'd catch you by surprise too.
OP, in a way, that's kind of scary, isn't it? The way I'm understanding your situation, apparently this person was able to wander kind of far before meeting up with a human (you) right?
But on the other hand, here was a visitor who apparently had to use his/her own devices to figure out where to go and what to do, since the person he was there to visit wasn't in her office. That's kind of a problem, right?
Do you all often get visitors? If so, seems like some kind of system should be put in place. Even if it's a little bell or something to alert everyone that a visitor is there...so someone can attend to the visitor.
This wasn't actually a stranger off the street - he was a fellow employee, as I'm in a secure area and he couldn't have accessed it without a badge of his own. And I'm actually very accustomed to people asking me where someone's office is, and as I've said, I always help them, even if it's not someone in my actual suite, but most of us on the floor all know each other. I point them in the right direction or if they seem confused, I walk them across the suite or down the hall, if needed.
What surprised me really was limited to the idea that I was apparently expected to know where this other person was. Obviously many people wouldn't have been bothered by the question although I still don't know what the "right" answer was supposed to be because other than making up their own facts of the way things supposedly work in my office, no one has actually answered that. Because keeping track of the comings and goings of almost 20 other people isn't happening and it's not like anyone goes traipsing around the suite informing everyone when they come and go.
Oh, as for my posting history, not that it's any one's business, but the work I do is generally in short(ish) bursts of very focused concentration and then I will often spend a few minutes on line in between, to clear my head. I'm a fast reader and a pretty fast typist so I can type even my sometimes verbose posts in not that much time. Since I recently had my annual review and got the highest percent raise my employer offers, I'l take that as a sign that they are satisfied with my work.
One more time, what "constructive" thing was she supposed to have done?
Check the bathrooms? Run around looking for the other person? What? You're the one who made the statement that it was almost unanimous that she hadn't done anything "constructive."
ETA if anything, he should have asked the person in the next office from the one he had the appointment with rather than roaming around. As for the person who said she should be fired for the blank look, that's just hilarious.

Yes, I'm sure you walk through a full office suite, telling all of the ~20 people you pass as you walk past the front door of the suite and down the other side, where you are going every time you leave your office.
In any case, I'm not worked up, I'm actually pretty amused at how people feel compelled to make up completely fake scenarios to criticize me over. I guess it's been a slow weekend, but I'm sure someone else will post something worthy of a fresh pile on first thing tomorrow morning.
That;s not at all what she said. She said often if someone is expecting someone they will tell someone "I'm running to such and such but will be back in 10 if Joe from HR shows up" or whoever it is. You are way too defensive and reading a lot into posts.
Most of us just said say "I don't know" and forget about it. But none of us find it rude that he asked.

But you didn't ask in your opening post what you should have done, you asked if your attitude was elitist.
Most opinions expressed here are that what he did was not that unusual. You keep focusing on the idea that people are saying you should have known where your co-worker was, but in fact very few people have said that. A lot of the flack you are getting is for the attitude that it was somehow wrong or odd for this guy to ask you his question.
