Someone at my work once did this, but she said she was going to retire and when people wanted to throw a party she "changed her mind" and then, weeks later when everyone was lulled into complacency, she just didn't show up and we never saw her again. I am assuming she retired and isn't dead.
If you're not showing or doing anything negative then that is not immature. You are still behaving professionally. You just get to enjoy it. Besides, you never know what goes on in anyone's mind behind the veneer anyway, management or employee. Might as well enjoy it.
Few are THAT special that they'd be missed.
Although I would dearly love the chance to miss some folks...after they left! Like the ones who brought the team down with their "I'm just so irreplaceable! . ".
what about your benefits, pension, health insurance, pending vacation pay, etc, etc? Seems if you just go AWOL you would forfeit those..... so, the joke would be on you
I don’t think an employer would care enough to do a wellness check. They’d probably consider it a no call no show and keep it moving.
I have called the police for a wellness check several times over the years.
I wouldn't find it very satisfying to ghost an employer. Really, what is the point? Wouldn't it be better to hand in that resignation letter, and say goodbye to the people you like, and ignore the people you don't?

Fantasizing about doing things that cause someone to suffer a little, or fantasizing about "sticking it to someone" (like quitting without notice) is absolutely immature. If you dislike your job to the point of fantasizing this way, find a new job. I find it odd that someone would stay at a job and fantasize about something like this.

This is the US. Very good chance OP has NONE of the four.
"what about your benefits, pension, health insurance, pending vacation pay, etc, etc?"
forms were already filled out, notarized and authorized...however management did not know,
or did not care, which illustrates exactly WHY i did what i did. clueless management.
oh, i forfeited accumulated vacation/sick days.
so worth it.
It feels great just to be around during the two week notice period after giving a resignation notice. You've got all the power, and yet you're smiling and acting professionally and helpfully. And seeing the faces of your soon to be ex-managers - absolutely priceless. No pressure, no problems, no screaming. Just peaceful coexistence until you walk out for good. Ghosting? Why, when you can have some fun (just don't show it).
