Sounds innocent to me if you are getting great official reviews. Of course, in my field when you are terminated there has to be a paper trail, including subpar reviews. If they were going to let you go, I would think they'd just be honest and tell you what they are doing and ask for your cooperation during the transition, not surprise it upon you.
I've been a manager myself and it can be a nerve-racking position. It's not as clear cut if you are doing a "good" job since your job is managing others and "good" is defined by whatever upper management says. If I was going to be let go for something other than a policy violation, I would expect to have a negative review or at least a negative write-up at some point and some kind of an opportunity to fix it.
