I had to laugh. Hopefully she had something else lined up. Nice manicure.

When all you can get are crummy jobs, you learn to put up with a lot of crummy conditions and bosses until something better comes along. Then you get out.

Walmart offers free college tuition at a number of on line colleges. That's worth about $30K. Possibly something to take advantage of to make the job more bearable in the short term.

Which back then it wasn't as bad as it is now. More could rise up if they wanted into management without needing some amount of college. A few years later with the explosion of MBA Wall Street wonderboys really made it a starter job, not anything that could be a liveable wage job. Today a co-worker and friend's father wouldn't even have a chance to move up and become a purchaser for a retail store.

It was a minimum wage job , $2/91/hour, bagging groceries and pushing carts (not automated pushing like now, but just physical pushing), dozens at a time, up a steep hill, in the summer-while sweating profusely. This went on for an hour or so, near closing.

One year later, I began college, got Bachelors in 4, Masters by 8 years later (part time college while working 45-50 hours/week).

That is what this girl should be doing if she dislikes McJobs and McWages. School and work while doing so (I averaged 20-25/hrs Monday-Friday plus 14 hours weekends during BA years during semesters, 55-65 hours/wk in summer).

If she feels she is unworthy of investing in herself, she will spend decades at similar McJobs to the one she quit, making McWages, which is their Fair Market Value.

They should not be able to w/o an education in Supply Chain Management. That has allowed retailers to raise profit levels and cash flow, by buying just what is needed, as close to Just In Time principles as grocery stores can obtain.

The local store, btw, does not purchase. The regional or national hq does using sophisticated techniques.

They are not job banks. They are businesses which happen to need people with sound backgrounds to handle their complex business model.

Which back in the day you were working people learned on the job, not through an MBA with no specifics to an industry. You are being obtuse and naive about how it worked back then versus now. Back then companies actually invested in employees and employees stayed with companies. Today they do not and then wonder why employees don't have loyalty to them. Maybe more need to take the Amazon idea of helping with college tuition... Walmart, surprisingly is one of the companies taking that idea too.
