Is living close to your job a luxury? As I get older I'm interested in less hassle when commuting to my job,and I'm also trying to remain flexible as far as housing so I'd be looking to rent as close to work as possible at this point. Also, what do you consider an average commute...or a long one?
Close is a relative term. I'm about 20 miles because the worksite is isolated. I've only had one job over my career that I lived within a couple of miles of where I worked. Interestingly the commute time was about the same for all places I've been.
0 to 15 minutes--about as good as you could ever hope for. (Short of working from home.)
15 to 30--average, acceptable.
30 to 45--pushing it, but still okay.
45 to 60--it better be a really good job, or a really good house, or you just *really* don't have other options.
60 and over--either find a job closer to home, or move.
Currently, I'm at a smidge less that 15, so....good as one can hope for.
I would say that of most of the jobs I've had, the majority fell into the 15 to 30 minute range. Though interestingly, two of them wound up shortening. One went from 15 minutes (driving) to 5 minutes (walking)--that wasn't intended, the company I worked for expanded and started renting out other office buildings, and one of them happened to be across the street from the apartment complex I was living in at the time. (I could literally see my apartment window from my office window.)
My current job went from a 30 minute commute to a slightly less than 15 minute commute, but that's because I moved. Oddly enough, the distance between both my old house and my current house to where I work wasn't much different, but the old house was located in a more traffic-congested area than the current one is.
I would love to live further out of the city, but I hate commuting, so....here I am.
A tad over 20 minutes each way, which is still good by me. I prefer 15 minutes, but in this case, I settled a bit further in order to be closer to a part of town where I might work in the future. So sort of like an “insurance premium” except in commute time rather than dollars.
Current job is a 15 minute commute, so it’s good. Prior job was a 40 minute commute in good traffic; 50 minutes to an hour in bad. Company had relocated to this location from where I had a five minute commute.
25 minutes to the office, which is 100% optional. I go in 2-3 times a month on average. We are a remote company, only reason for an office is that we offer our customers training and need a place to host that, and a place to stage shipping and logistics.
No. It's a common sense objective.
Some manage it easily. Many can't.

Max acceptable (portal to portal) is 60 min. Ideal is under 20min (incl red lights and school bus lines).
I managed this pattern when the kids were young. Allowed for errands and such to be easy.
Fully retired now, but once I bought land and built a house, I was 6 minutes from work. After I retired and got a part-time job, I was 10 minutes from work. This is a benefit of living in a Micropolitan area.
