I remember one company I worked for, before the one this Thread is about, the Shop Foreman said the "f" word to the female Accounting Manager after she ask him a question in the Shop.... and I heard it. The Manager went to the President/Owner of the company and told him what happened and that I had heard the Foreman say that word to her. The Engineering Manager (my boss and his) and company Pres/Owner talked to me in the Conference Room and I told them exactly what I'd heard. This Foreman got "written up" and told by the Pres/Owner of the company "don't you ever say that word around any of my female employees ever again! If I hear that you have, I will personally fire you and have your final check ready the next day! I will not tolerate my female employees be spoken to that way!" The Shop Foreman told me this.
Unfortunately this is not uncommon. During the probation period they don't have to give a reason. Most of the time HR is an arm of the management, not an independent arbitrator.
