I have been unemployed since the start of the year. I have not been able to even get any interviews in the area I live in - Colorado's front range. Where in the USA is the best job market for Unix Sys Admin's right now ?

I was told the Washington DC area is the best for this kind of work. True ? How about the Bay Area of California ? My leaning would be to go to the Bay Area since I would get along with that culture better than the DC Area.

Out in userland, what is the "talk on the street" ?

I might suggest a broader search, instead of such a narrow focus. Can you do anything else in the IT world besides Unix Sys Admin?

A Unix system would be quite easy for which to find work. I think you are being to narrow in your search. Look in more than one place, Monster/Career Builder... there are ones specifically for IT out there too.

Do search based upon System Admin w/o the Unix and for Unix related without Admin.. do you get what I'm saying. Don't limit your self to only that particular position.

It sounds to me as if you are willing to re-locate, and so there are MANY jobs out there, several of which will provide relocation assistance. I find it difficult to believe you haven't even gotten a nibble yet.

Don't know your background in Unix but here is what I found at Raytheon in Aurora CO

Sr Computer Systems Technlgst I - UNIX Applications & Storage - Job ID: IIS112255
Sr Computer Systems Technlgst II - UNIX, Applications & Storage - Job ID: IIS112254

I'm sure there are others at other companies in the area as well as in other states. These are Administrator positions, but sometmes companies don't longer use the title System Administrator. Also it's not a big leap into Information Assurance, which could also be called Computer Security, Information Security or something else.

Good luck to you in your search

If your gonna do DC. You need a clearance. At a min you need a TS. There are companies that hire without TS, but you really have to have something they can't just get somewhere else "CCIE comes to mind" or "RHCE" I'm just letting you know. I was in the hunt for a DC job for a while, but found the salaires too low for the cost of living there. So I gave up my clearance.
