Hi,
I've been searching for an entry level job for IT. I applied as data entry clerk and NO single phone calls. What am I doing wrong ? I do have a college degree in IT. The job I'm applying is not even an advanced job for me. I'm just looking for an entry job. Any suggestion of where I should look. I tried agencies and they said there is no opening...
I would try an IT specific temp agency. Other agencies might not know about your field well enough. Also, you may have to look in another geographic area if that is possible for you.
Data entry is no different than any other industry. It has had layoffs too and there are thousands of people with experience in the field that are struggling to get jobs.
And as with any job search, your resume should be tailored for the job you are seeking. Don't include relevant information. If the job doesn't include a college degree or your college degree is in a different field, don't list it. Accomplishments that don't contribute to your suitability for the job should also not be included.
If you have a degree in IT - look at trying to get on as a temp/contractor with a local shop - even "intern" for a few hours.
A data entry clerk... thats an "out of high school" type job.. Which is basic...
Apply for ANYTHING!!!! SPAM your resume out to any type of entry level jobs.... look for Customer Service type jobs in LARGE companies - get in on the ground floor doing minor stuff - then move around within the company.
And as a person in IT... a college degree is great but lacks the BASIC fundamentals of what IT is really about. Get certified - A+, Network +, etc...
Data Entry isn't really an IT job. If you don't have any IT experience, look for a helpdesk or entry-level system administration job. Even working at Geek Squad would be something you could put on your resume while you search for something better....
If you aren't having any luck, just try to find something that pays the bills and start looking at earning some certifications (A+/Net+/MCSA/MCSE/etc.)
