Currently thinking about making a move to another country to work and settle. I am an educated and compassionate person who is culturally aware and intelligent, looking for a decent quality of life. Love my home town London and always will, but need to see the fruits of my labours, resulting in a decent home and settled family life. Some better weather would'nt go amiss either !! If you have any information regarding a move such as this, I would love to hear form you.

Thanks very much X

I guess your only bet is somewhere in the EU as you can't work in the US unless you're a US citizen or have resident alien status. Cheers and good luck!

I assumed that I would have to apply for residency in some capacity before I could work legally in the US.

The word judgmental springs to mind. I was only asking a simple question.

I am a resident of Houston, TX, 4th largest city in the US! I love it here! It is a very diverse city and has a lot to offer....especially for families. The weather is awesome...although it can be pretty hot May-August. The job market is very promising and the cost of living is relatively low. You can build a brand new home in a great suburb for about $160k to $200k, there are no state or grocery taxes (if you are familiar with those). Check it out. www.houstontx.gov Good luck and God bless!!!

You need to do some research. Unless you can fill a position which no US Citizen or otherwise already-qualified legal alien can fill, the process to obtain working status often takes years. There are plenty of US Government websites which will give you all the information on immigration and you should first read all about it before even thinking about the possibility of working in the US. Cheers!

Thanks ruby. I hadn't really thought of Houston. I think I have a worry about states in the southern part of America as in Europe, we have an image of them being the most racist. I am sure you can find racism anywhere though. I have been to NYC and have lots of family there. I really liked it and like new Yorkers, as I think they are similar to us Londoners. However, it is very segregated in comparison to London. People mix a lot more here and living in areas where everybody is the same colour is totally alien to someone from a City like mine. When I stayed in Brooklyn and everyone was black except one white guy it was a very weird experience indeed.

My boyfriend is white and is from Poland. My children's father is Italian and English. With my heritage they are altogether Afro-Asian-Anglo-Italian, so you can see that for us we would need a multi-cultural place to live in. Housing in the US generally is so much cheaper than here. You can't get anything decent for £200,000 let alone $200,000 in London. The average wage you would need to earn to be able to afford a modest house is £70,000 per year. It is very difficult.

Thanks very much for your help XxX

I am originally from Mississippi which is known to be deep south and extremely racist, however I never experienced any direct racism. On the other hand it wasn't diverse at all. Certain races and social classes lived together while others stayed in other parts of the city. However, Houston is nothing of the sort. I actually experienced a little culture shock when I moved here because I wasn't used to the diversity in race. There are all nationalities, races, social classes here and everyone gets along. My husband is black and white, I am black, one of our next door neighbors is an Indian family, the other is hispanic. I live in an upper class neighborhood and it is comprised of whites, blacks, indians, asians, hispanics, etc and we all get along just great!! It's a very diverse city!!!
