I have a situation that I need some advice about. I have a good job with a big company in Maryland with offices on the west coast and would really like to stay with this company. I want to relocate to the west coast in the coming 7-10 months and so the problem is when and how to handle it with my supervisors here in Maryland. I'm not sure what is the best way as I'd like to just do a transfer with the same company but realize that my current position will need to be filled too. So, do I tell them now about my projected plan and take the risk that they may just fill my position and let me go when they have someone new? Do I wait for 4-5 months and tell them then? Do I wait until 2-4 months before my planned move to tell them? The other issue is being able to access the company HR to apply for west coast positions. Obviously, I'd need my current supervisors to know before I could apply for the west coast positions so it would be easier if they knew my plans now. I guess the real issue is protecting myself from being unemployed, while also realizing that I'll have to give up my job security once I tell them and trust that I'll be kept on until I am ready next spring. How would you handle this situation? I appreciate any input and thank you.

Check your company policy.

Our 'lil company has facilities worldwide, and when we're interested in another position whether it's on site or not, we have to notify our supervisor BEFORE applying.

That would be really cool if your organization holds positions open for folks EXACTLY WHEN they need them.

It seems you know what to do you're just in the early stages of figuring out the logistics.
As yaz says, Check your company policy.
Also:

1) what is the preference given to 'internal transferring' employees?
2) start checking out the openings that are even available out west. will there be a spot open that you want at the time you need it?
3) YOU may not be ready to go for 7-10 months, will there a job for you during at that time? You'll have to think about timing you search to your preferred window.

4) Is your current manager understanding of personal quality of life issues -- or an a$$, who is not?

All this determines when you let you manager know.

If you start watching openings NOW, then when one comes up that you want you could let you manager you'd like to apply for it....and inform him/her of your desire (intention) to transfer to the West Coat location.

This will determine your approach.
A good manager will understand, plan for, and will actually try and help facilitate the transfer.
A bad one will be resentful and be more of a hurdle.

funny and so true!! I guess that is a bit much to ask for - you never know though, sometimes the cards all fall into place, that is what I am hoping for. Thanks for your post Yaz.

I think i'm a good candidate for the internal transfer as, at least over the last few months I've been looking, there are openings with the skill set I have. as far as my a$$ manager, I think it is the type to be focused on making themselves look good regardless of how much is demanded of the staff and if someone is going to disrupt the status quo, that someone will not be looked on kindly, something I've already observed.
i'll leave this posting up and watch for more feedback and keep on doing my research - thanks for your posting fdflk, appreciate the input.
