The government should not be in the business of "fixing" the economy. They more the governmant intervenes, the more the economy gets messed up.
The free market needs to be allowed to correct itself. Unfortunately Mr Obama and "progressives" are endorsing Soviet-like ideas, and ill-informed people are jumping on the bandwagon.

For great lessons on how too much government intervention did not ehlp the economy, but made it much worse, please read The Forgotten Man by Amity Shlaes

It is the truth about how the New Deal prolonged and worsened the Great Depression. It shoild be required reading for any 20th century history course and for anyone in any government office!

Default What a crazy statement!!!

The Federal Government spends billions trying to effect the economy through Departments like: The Small Business Administration, The Commerce Department, the Federal Reserve, Justice Department (anti trust division) and all the other Federal Agencies that monitor the business community.

The quality of its leaders and laws passed by Congress and signed by the President have a major impact on unemployment and our economy.

Everyone was employed in the USSR as well. heck, people could even get arrested for not showing up to work!

There is a difference between regulating to promote fairiness and opportunity in the free market and being directly involved in it.

infrastructure rebuilds
green/energy independence direction.
fines, prosecution of fraud, deceptive business practices, lobbyist, bribes, payola, contracts to friends.
Fix the healthcare system.
End war - invest in America like we do now in Iraq.
incentives for U.S. mfg, kill NAFTA
If he can pull off any 3 of these we'll see some hope for the future of humanity and the planet.

I agree, the economy isn't some river that finds its own best course. We are competing with a world economy that isn't operating on a fair playing field. In some nations, people are near slaves. The more jobs that leaving American soil will eventually impact everyone. Some think it won't happen to them, but many who had good jobs have lost them, and their homes, too.

A country has a standard of living based on its economic strength. The middle class has diminished. This isn't based on what party you do or don't belong to, or what political slant you ascribe to. It is based on statistics and facts.

Remember, it's never a recession to those who have a job. Well, I have a job, but I know it's a recession.

Actually I believe that the definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters with negative growth. We have not had that right now. The mainstream media is invested in democrats winning elections, so they have painted a picture of the economy that is exaggerated at best, and completely false at worst. But people swallow it, no questions asked without doing their homework.

What has made the US great and so advanced beyond other nations economically is our freedom, not having too much governmental involvement. The countries with the most governmental meddling have the worst economies. More regulation will decrease our standard of living and our economic well-being. But for people who think everyone in all countries should all be equal, I guess they'll love that. But that's called socialism.
