I remember seeing a thread on this but I didn't get around to reading all the valuable information. Has anyone ever written for profit before? Does anyone know a good place to start?

I've done it before, usually after being solicited (and for no upfront costs) but I want to do more. Where would one start to do this?

what type of freelance writing are you looking for? Ad writing? Editing books? magazine article writing, web writing? I've done this professionally for a long time. What type of writing are you looking for?

I'd recommend going to Google and typing in freelance writing. You will come up with a lot of potential sites. Also try www.sologig.com I've used that site before and it's quite good.

In the beginning I did a lot of writing for free to build my portfolio. If I wasn't as proficient say in web writing, I'd offer to write for less than the going rate so I could gain experience while still making some money.

I'm doing some right now, but it's a guy that found my portfolio after i applied to a customer service job for his company.

I never know what to charge. I'm not charging him very much because I have two other jobs. I pretty much have 2 years in magazine writing and 2 years in news story writing... I'm not sure what sort of a going rate should be.

do you have to pay for the sites like sologig? I'm not sure if I want to put money down for those sites or not. I haven't decided yet.

never put money down for sites. It's a scam. The only person who should ever pay is the employer.

For writing I used to charge $40 per hour. May sound like a lot to some, but you have to factor in you will have taxes taken out when you file, so it's not really $40 per hour. It's a very reasonable price since many people cannot write well. The lowest I'd ever consider is $30 per hour. I have done $20 per hour but that's basically giving my time away. Just a few numbers to throw out there for you to ponder as you decide what to charge.
