Hi everyone. I was just curious how long you lasted at your first full-time job. I graduated from college in June of 2008 and have been at my current job for about 9 months. However i'm not really happy with it and I don't like the city and there are other opportunities in my field. I'm thinking of leaving but would it be adviseable after only 9 months? Would it look bad to my prospective employer?

I was at my last job for 3.5 years, and would have stayed until I retired--probably later than earlier as I really loved the job--had the company not been sold. I was offered two options to join the new company, both required relocation which I wasn't willing to do, so I'm no longer working there.

I'd say the average time I have worked jobs is 2 years. I did summer jobs during college at the same office, then afterward I worked there a year. Then I went to grad school, worked my last semester full time and went to grad school full time...

I worked one of those jobs 1.5 and went to another school and worked 2 years.
Since then, I had one other full time job (lasted 2 years till I had my son).

Most people do change jobs a lot...you can google the average time people stay at a job, though what works for one person may not work for someone else.

My first full time job, I was with the company for almost 7 years. However, it was a big company and I moved around a lot internally to different businesses and roles. I never stayed in one business/role for more than 18 months.

Almost 3 years (would have been 3 years on the dot if I wasn't laid off 2 months earlier).

Oh, I misread, my first full time job, hmmm... I started as p/t when I was 16 and worked there until I was 21--went f/t when I was 18. So I guess five years?

You have nothing to lose by looking. Just make sure you don't bad mouth your current employer. You need to come up with some good reasons for leaving other than money, location etc. to tell prospective employers.

My first full time job out of school only lasted 3 months because I was laid off. After that the next one was just shy of two years. I would say I average 2 years per job. The longest was 4.5 (had been trying to find another job within one month of being there) and the shortest was two jobs that lasted 3 months. All the others were around 2.

my first job straight out of high school and was there for twenty yrs because they appreciated me and gave good benefits . they are out of buisness now . the owner died and his wife took over and she ran the business into the ground . !! I miss working there and have really felt like I dont fit in anywhere since !! but one makes the best of it though . I hope to find something really soon that i am comfortable in . good luck to you .

I had two jobs that I sayed at for about a year each before moving on . I my case it was the opprtunity presented really. I wouldn't suggest that you leave too many jobs too quickly tho as that will hurt your resume eventaully. That is why you need to chose wisely.
