Why do they want salary if the range is already posted? (application, unemployed)

The job posting already has a starting and a midpoint salary listed, but the online application has a required, numeric desired salary field.
The posted midpoint salary is reasonable.
What figure should I enter?
Also it appears this company posted this position a month ago, but with an entirely different job title.
I have a feeling they could not get the "ideal" candidate.
Enter in the range if you want to be considered. Apparently some programs send automatic rejections to applicants who dont meet the salary requirements and HR never sees the application.
