How would you respond to a coworker or outsider who asked you to share confidential information?

I have heard every response when people are asking.
No one will know
I thought we were friends
Will you tell me if I guess

Your answer is: "This is confidential information."

"That's confidential information." You shouldn't say anything more than that.

Is this personal info or someone else's info?

If it's yours go right ahead and spill if you want. If it's someone else's then the answer is no. Have you heard of HIPPA? And even without it, isn't there enough identity theft going around? What will you do if they say, but so and so is in on it, they gave me the info.

Psss, It's HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and it only applies to personal medical information.

Wow, so sorry I didn't run my spell check before posting.

And the person didn't say what kind of info other than personal, so it could be healthcare related. And if it's not, that's why I made the next comment, the one that starts with "and even without it".

If you wanted to look smart you should try again.

I am aware that confidential info is confidential and I am a strict enforcer. However, it does not stop others from asking. I would just say I did not know but obviously people know I do. I have had my info given out or people know I am applying for this or that job within the corporation, info I did not share. This makes me so angry, not only that but I believe in confidentiality I just want a true way to say no that stops the asker dead in their tracks. I guess I will just say "I can not share confidential information". Its just so weird, I wish people would just not ask.

The info is more like,

Why was x called into the presidents office?

Did Bob get the raise? Did he get the promotion?

Did the supervisor tell on her?

Why did she get fired?

Actually the poster said "confidential" not "personal" which led me to believe it's more company related than human related. I wasn't "trying to look smart." It's a common error--many people assume that it's HIPPA.
