If I tell people I'm a psych RN, they assume I can see into their brains and games and strip them.
They also immediately want to tell me about their third cousin who is on lithium, etc.

Once when answering a personal ad, the guy started immeditately on the phone to tell me what he did for a living. I stopped him, saying I wanted to talk to him for ten minutes without these identifiers. Turns out he thought a psych nurse would see past his B.S. (only partly right) and I thought a success-oriented social climbing MBA wouldn't interest me (wrong).
I'd much rather know what a person is thinking about these days then answering "what do you do." I don't personally identify with how I make a living, I've done many other things for a living, and frankly don't care what someone does as long as it's legal. I only want to know if their living really is their identity. Of course, where I live (west of Rt. 128 in Boston) any man you meet who can afford to keep a car on the road is doing something with software.

I work with a private jet maintenance/chartering company. People assume I know a bunch of celebrities, that my company caused the recession and that I'm stuck up and rich.

Couldn't be further from the truth, really.

Started as a summer job in 1979, got into working on Victorians and period homes, loved it! And stayed with it. Although now that I'm getting a bit *ahem* older, I have other irons in the fire as well. But I still enjoy it. Good honest work.

Don't really get crap from guys (actually women are worse IMHO - topic for another forum -) and I can dish it out better than I can take it, anyway.

But yeah, I've quite often heard people comment after they got to know me, "at first I thought you were, you know, umm...." I always said it's a great field for women who like men. Heck you're around them all the time. And a shirtless tanned muscular guy wearing little else but shorts, a tool belt and construction boots...yummy, grrrr, mmmmrreow. (Did I just make a sexist comment? LOL.)

I have also been an over the road trucker, a Sea Bee (construction battalion) in the Navy Reserves, and a few other jobs I won't mention.

I wish more would go for it but whenever anyone thinks of construction they automatically think of three guys with a jack hammer whistling at the girls on the street corner.

Every three years I have to accumulate continuing education credits to keep my certification up to date and when I walk into a room theirs 400 white guys and 2 women.

Why is that?

What I do is perfect for women. It's a perfect job. 90% of the time it is in an office environment, it's a job where you are first hired and last fired, pay is at least $45,000 to $60,000 a year after five to six years and if you are the certificate holder nobody will ever mess with you.

Right now employment is at 100%.

If you have kids there's always freelance work you can do from a spare office in the house.

In 30 years I managed to get one lady through to certification about 8 years ago. She's a single mom, works out of her house and makes $40,000 to $60,000 a year while she's her own boss.

People are just trying to help, but I get so frustrated when people forward ads, openings, etc for jobs totally not in my field. The most frustrating, My first degree was liberal arts, foreign languages, Spanish, French, German..........my mother kept sending me ads for "languages" computer languages, try explaining that to her
