I think it's awesome. I would love to be semi-retired in my 40s. Work to live, don't live to work.

Excellent! I only wish at 32 I had been as wise as you.

Exactly. That's why I don't worry to much about what people say you 'need' to live comfortably in any given area. As long as I can afford a clean place to live, food, and some clothes and entertainment, I'm happy. I can find a number of cheap fun things to do otherwise. I would LOVE to make 100k a year but if I never do, that's fine.

Similarily, I think the OP's friends are fortunate to be 40 and already able to semi retire and do what they want with their lives. Probably the people who think they are lazy are just jealous they can't do the same.

Some people can't even live on $100,000 a year as they live way beyond their means, but I guess that's a topic for another conversation.

I also know many that even consider their "importance", if you will, by how much they have in their bank account. Very sad as I believe a lot of that reflects on their insecurities.

A lot of rich people get and stay rich by being cheap too. I've noticed that poorer people (course more likely the people who've had to be in food service, etc. at some point) are the ones who tip more, while people who actually have money give the delivery guy a buck or two. And at the hotel where I work, the ones who will fight with you on the price are the ones who, when you get to what kind of vehicle they brought are the ones who have to give you all the details 'brand new cherry red ferrari with blah blah blah' or 'well, let me think which one I brought today...oh yeah, I've got my 06 bmw with me. It's rainforest haze, or maybe 'evergreen glaze'...well, you can probably just put green'

I think it's kind of sad to consider success and importance that way too. What's important is how well you live insofar as your happiness and the happiness of those you spend your time with, not how much money you're going to leave behind to be fought over when you die.

Not lazy at all. I think that it is great that they are able to pursue what they want and have chosen to live below their means so that they are able to enjoy their life. They aren't freeloaders, they just have chosen not to get on that wheel of hyper consumption in which they need to always aspire to bigger and more stuff. Kudos to them.

If I were in a position where I could afford to live modestly on a part time salary so that I could pursue similar goals, I would do the same thing.

Who are these idiots who are saying otherwise, sheesh?

What do you think Dingler? What's your opinion?
Ellie, I completley agree with you. However, dont hold your breath for an opinion fron Dingler he just throws topics our there and doesnt put his two cents. I have asked him before on his opinion or question about his previous thread and ....no reply. Go figure.

I wish we could live with part time jobs pay bills and still be able to travel. I'd say the couple is wise and living the American Dream.

As a matter of fact, I saw Dingler chime in on some topic yesterday, maybe it was in the POC forum. I was surprised.
