I've heard of this phrase many times and never quite understood it. I don't understand why, but every time I am about to make it big in a company I go on a drinking binge and don't show up for work anymore completely ruining my career with that company. Has anyone ever experienced this , because I can't possibly be the only person that has sabotaged their career so many times, can I?

Evergreen,

It sounds like you might just need some help with substance abuse. I know folks whose weakest moments are when things are really almost "too good" or they are swamped with a ton of stuff that needs to be done....so much they don't know where to start....so they don't do anything but run to their addictions. Just had a conversation with someone like that today.

Get some help and a support group. You're not alone.

It's simple. You're an alcoholic. Start going to local AA meetings. It's that easy. Thousands upon thousands have experienced what you're going through. Losing jobs because of your alcoholism surely has become quite a drag, otherwise you wouldn't have started this thread. Probably it's cost you a lot of friends, too, and maybe even some family.

You CAN overcome it if you want to. Up to you and only you can take that first step. Good luck!

yes I place that in the same category as procrastination, avoidance, "laziness" or feeling unmotivated, putting off things you know you should do because of your anxiety, self doubt..etc. Are you an alcoholic though? I don't know. I don't get that just based off the few lines u posted. The way I see it if it wasn't alcohol it would've been something else as long as it prevented you from having to get out of your comfort zone.

Its no wonder why you think a 2 hour interview is ridiculous and why you could decide on a candidate in 15 minutes.

You need some help. Go find some

Nobody can tell you whether or not you're an alcoholic, that's up to you. You didn't provide enough information for anyone to make an educated guess, IMO.

Perhaps you get anxious at the thought of added responsibility and drink to escape...if your assessment is correct, then I agree - find a good counselor (an addictions counselor if you think you are an alcoholic) and talk it through.

If you're an alcoholic, AA is certainly a viable option but the way you describe it, in this case drinking is a symptom and you are the problem. AA is a lot of work - it involves more than just showing up to meetings - and also involves more than simply not drinking. Very often people in early sobriety find that they have to deal with the problems they've been masking by getting trashed...it's not an easy road. (If, in fact, you do have a problem with alcohol.)
