Do you think a minor in Chinese will help in getting a job?

I would think it would certainly give you a leg up. As would Japanese, Spanish, or Korean.

The minor would be little more than a point of distracting conversation in an interview if you do not capitalize on it with some kind of relevant internship or foreign study on your own. Seriously -- if you have a desire to travel to China and test your ability to live abroad that would be a WORLD of difference that just having the minor. 99% of business people from the US that spend any time in China did nothing more than use a Rosetta Stone type software program to pick up some useful phrases. Any firm would be MUCH MORE IMPRESSED if you worked in any kind of internship or even "independent study" in Asia or the US offices of a firm that has major operations in China...

Good Luck!

Yes, daughter will be doing a study abroad immersion at a Taiwan university because her interest is working for a US firm. She'll have four years study at her US University and the summer program in Tairwan. I've just been wondering how much it might be worth. Thanks for the imput.

I know a few foreign exchange students who have learned other languages and are studying abroad and working in those countries. My chinese friend knows Japanese as well, minor in Japanese but he's actually pretty fluent, and is studying abroad there.

I'm sure he wouldn't find any trouble looking for work in Japan because of his chinese proficiency which could be beneficial to companies that do work in China.

Also, most of my university's finance and economics faculty are chinese

Hmmm, unless she READS and WRITES Chinese there's not a huge benefit. I'm fluent and read & write (and I'm white to boot), it's a godsend, but just speaking the language isn't good enough, everyone speaks it these days
