I graduated a couple of years back with a Finance degree and basically just took the basic accounting courses. Well now that I have been in the workfield, I've noticed that accounting is very important to have as a background.
I was thinking of getting a second degree in accounting and then going for a CPA in the future to make myself more marketable. I am currently working but unable to move up the ladder since I lack the accounting skills.
Anybody with a Finance degree out there, have you had the same problem or having trouble finding other jobs in Finance because of this?
yes, same problem. They should warn all the business/finance/marketing/etc students that they should take more accounting courses. You can do anything in business with an accounting degree but it's hard to do anything numbers related in business without an accounting degree. Nearly all of the jobs I would advance to require a CPA or at least 26 hours in accounting. I have less than half that. It has hurt my career & I've thought about going back to get more accounting courses but have yet to do it.
hey emirate25. i followed you here from another thread. did you ever go back to take advanced accounting classes? also how would go about doing that. Would you suggest going back and getting a second undergrad degree or taking a few classes at a community college?
I was thinking about getting a second degree in Accounting since I have some Accounting classes under my belt at a junior college close to my house. I decided not to this semester because to be honest with you, I can't afford it. Working as a temp right now, I have an emergency fund that I will rather keep than spend on extra classes. I'll figure out something eventually...
I asked at my University if I could go back and get a second degree in accounting and they said I couldn't. I got to look at other schools. Not really sure if i'll even go back for it now though. They said I could get a masters but i don't think it would help me right now with zero experience anyway.
