What Apple's suppliers are doing is not right, but by conducting their own internal audit and publishing the results, Apple is raising awareness for an issue that plagues the entire industry--their competitors just aren't willing to look behind that curtain. The truth of the matter is, this is an endemic problem in the electronics business. Anyone who has ever purchased any electronic device in the past twenty years has benefited from child labor and exploited labor practices.

This report is simply the first step for Apple. They published similar reports in the past about environmental degradation in the industry too, and then they went beyond the rhetoric and changed the way they build computers: reducing manufacturing and packaging waste, improving life cycle energy efficiency, and eliminating toxic metal content. They aren't perfect but they are leading the way.

I would expect Apple will be working to change their supplier practices in the years to come. Kudos to them for being willing to take such a harsh look at themselves and share their findings honestly. It is a rare thing in the business world.
