I got laid off from a contractor position a few weeks ago. Yesterday an HR person from the temp agency emailed me and asked for the windows password for the laptop the company issued me (not the temp agency but the site where I was working). I thought I had given that to them the day I left, but apparently not. I had just changed that pw and honestly can't remember what it is anymore. I can give my best guess but it would just be a guess - I tend to make my pw pretty strong.
Can they hold this over my head somehow if I can't provide them with it? And I thought that most IT depts. would have an admin pw that would provide access to any workstation? This is annoying. Getting help from them (help they swore they would provide me) since the layoff has been like pulling teeth and now this. Sigh.
Just be honest with them. Tell them you forgot it. I'm not sure why they're even asking you because every IT deptartment I've know can easily reset the password. Either their IT dept. sucks or they're lazy.
Either the manager doesn't have legitimate reason to access the computer, and thus IT isn't giving it to them, or IT is just lazy.
But either way, and even if they could 'hold it against you'--what can you do? You don't remember the password. So just get back to them and tell them that.

Indeed. If the IT department can't reset the system, they have a pretty crappy IT department.
Thanks for the great replies, they were all helpful. It's funny, the more I tried to remember that damn pw, the more uncertain I got. I'm going to reply in a day or two and tell them the truth, as advised. I was raised to be a people pleaser and "I don't know/remember" is a hard thing for me to say, but I'm not going to worry about it this time.
In a sweet ironic twist, the company is IT-based, but the team I was on didn't have direct support - just a remote # to call. So they probably have no idea about admin passwords. Oh well, I'm sure they'll get to the right help desk person eventually.
Was it a Lenovo laptop? B/c those hard-drive passwords can't be retrieved by IT... at least that's what I was told when I was working at IBM.
Perhaps that's true, but shouldn't they have an administrator account on the laptop?
